Therapeutic Recreation

Our Therapeutic Recreation program offers a variety of leisure options for youth and adults with disabilities. We provide an adaptive format as well as opportunities for inclusion; programs are offered year round. Our policy within the Therapeutic Recreation program is to plan for the person first, the disability second, and to encourage the independent pursuit of personal leisure interests.

This weekly social group meets Wednesday evenings and is designed for adults over 22 years who have developmental disabilities. Activities are age appropriate for adults and we encourage the independent pursuit of leisure interest, whenever possible. Night Club is a place to establish and cultivate friendships through recreation. Our usual meeting place is the West Hills Social Commons but our location varies with activity as well.

  • Activity schedules for weekly events are available in the Therapeutic Rec newsletter

Our 90 minute weekly schedule includes drop in activities, structured crafts, games, local trips and tours as well as attending Owatonna High School events as a group.

Leisure Swim

This aquatic group is designed for kids with disabilities who would like an opportunity to swim and enjoy weekly exercise in a supervised pool setting. The group is limited to 8 registrants and parents are asked to provide an assistant for their child if needed. Our swim staff is qualified in water safety and experienced with swimmers who have special needs. Anyone whose ability restricts them from using the men's and women's locker rooms independently is welcome to use the bathroom and changing area located directly off the pool. A south side accessible entrance is available for pool use. As we provide an experienced instructor, we ask that you provide a volunteer if your child needs further 1:1 assistance. Class limit is 8.

Friday Camp

This day camp program is designed for students with developmental disabilities, ages 6-22. The camp schedule features traditional day camp activities including games, crafts, nature exploration and water fun. Campers spend most of the day in small groups according to age, with the exception of lunch and group games. Parents receive a camp letter with specific details about the camp schedule and list of weekly rain plans. Rain Plans always include special indoor fun at various community locations and will still be a full day event. Except for transporting from a rain plan site, transportation is not provided for Friday Camp. Experienced Park and Recreation staff will lead the group. Our goal is to make friends and have fun.

Bowling League

The Therapeutic Recreation Monday Bowling League is available for teens and adults ages 10 years and older who have developmental disabilities or mental health issues. We bowl 2 games per week from 4:30-6:00pm. Due to changes at SpareTime, league is now limited to 40 bowlers, these spots will be filled on a first come, first served basis.
