In honor of Juneteenth, June 19th, all city buildings will be closed.
During the June 6th City Council Meeting, the Council amended the City's Personnel Policy to include the Juneteenth holiday.
This holiday was recently approved by Governor Walz recognizing the day when President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation went into effect for every enslaved person behind confederate lines. On June 19, 1865, Union Army General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas and read Order Number Three, informing the enslaved residents of Texas of their freedom. Since then, June 19 has since been a day of celebration, prayer and reflection focused on the history, hardships, and achievements of Black people throughout the United States of America.
